Purpose

The Microscopy Facility operated by the Neuroscience Research Institute (NRI) and the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, offers a workshop to provide intensive training using light microscopy with an emphasis on imaging live specimens.

This workshop is five days of seminars and hands on instruction. Through the course, participants will gain theoretical and practical experience with light microscopy on live specimens. Lectures will cover basic to advanced microscopy principals with an emphasis on live imaging applications.

Laboratories will focus on collecting quality images and data for research while optimally maintaining live specimens. Specimens will include cultured mammalian cells as well other important model systems for live research (e.g. C. Elegens, Ascidians, sea urchin embryos).

All attendees will use fully equipped research grade microscopes with the aid of expert instructors. All students will gain hands on experience with advanced imaging techniques including confocal and two-photon imaging (Note: this workshop is not designed to replace a confocal/two photon training course). With a maximum enrollment of 12 students, there will be many opportunities to work with all of the microscopes and cameras. Attendees should leave the course comfortable with both the principals and practice live imaging.
